"No respect for the dead." His words came out in silent whispers, his teeth clenched.

A small smile tugged on her lips. "Respect is earned in life, my lord. When a man fails to earn respect in life, it cannot suddenly be bestowed on him simply because he returned to the dust whence he came."

"At the very least, Lady Atkins, pretend," he admonished. "Pretend to mourn for your husband! You are a woman in mourning! Grief, sadness, decency is expected of you," he growled, stepping so close to her, his nose almost kissed hers. "Not a low-cut, salacious red dress!"

She inched forward, jaw set, until she could feel his warm breath on her skin. "And you are a man whose cousin's widow was only a few minutes ago caught with a man on top of her," she shot back, leaning further in until her lips were nearly brushing his as she searched his gaze. "Anger, rage, fury, is expected of you, my lord... Not jealousy!"

*

Newly widowed, the sudden death of Beatrice's husband has brought about her freedom from the shackles of a loveless marriage...

Or so she thinks.

All hope is quickly lost when she discovers her husband's cruelty in disinheriting her and leaving her penniless. But worse than his decision to disinherit her, is his decision to leave her at the mercy of his cousin; Noah, the very handsome Marquess of Camden.

Medieval England - Year 1450: Eleanor was a poor shopkeeper's daughter whose only hope for a better life for herself and her family was to marry well. When she caught the eye of Thomas Fletcher, a royal courtier of noble blood, her family thought he was the answer to all their problems. Eleanor thought he was unattractive and rude, but she didn't have any better options as a poor commoner so she accepted his proposal. They just had to somehow convince King Henry that she was a suitable bride for Thomas so he would approve of their union, because marrying Thomas meant that she would join Henry's inner circle as a courtier. At just twenty three years old Henry had to take over as the King of England when his father passed away unexpectedly. On his first day presiding over the royal court, he was faced with a tough decision, should he approve Thomas' marriage to Eleanor, a commoner that he was almost certain was unfit to join his Royal Court? He decided the only fair way to decide was to have her stay at his castle for a week as his guest so he could see for himself if she had what it took to withstand the pressure of the life of a royal courtier. What King Henry didn't count on was the feelings that started to grow for that commoner throughout the week. She was already betrothed to someone else and even if she wasn't, a King could never marry a commoner. But he also couldn't ignore the growing need he felt inside to be with her, even if it would throw his country into a civil war and turn both of their lives upside down. He knew some things were worth fighting for. Kyra (Complete) by LeeleeKez

He wanted her to say something, anything! Why was she agreeing to this? Why was she accepting marriage to a man she didn't even know? Why was she so weak, so stupid, so powerless? He wished above all things that he could walk away from this mess but his father had made it very clear; he couldn't walk away, only Kyra could. And until then, he was stuck with her. Yet, here she sat, hardly able to even look him in the eye. "You, Kyra, are many things" He said, his finger tracing the outline of her face. She held her eye lids shut, no doubt afraid to look at him. "A bait. A punishment. A torment" He snarled, making certain to leave his venom dripping from every word as he laid emphasis on them. He leaned forward and pressed his lips menacingly against her ears. "But. You. Will. Never. Be. My. Wife" Retracting his finger and leaning back, he watched her, waiting patiently for her reaction. But she sat there, her eyelids still shut, her hands trembling by her side and her lips pressed together. She said nothing and it infuriated him. He hated the woman that sat before him, the weakling that was his curse. He watched with great disgust as a drop of tear disentangled itself from her thick, black, long lashes and made its way down her flushed cheek while her eyes stood shut. With that, he turned around and walked away, determined to be the one to break Kyra. **** When Vihaan's father forces him into an arranged marriage with Kyra, he treats her as she deserves; with anger and disgust. Until the real reason his father chose Kyra is revealed; her life hangs on the balance and with her death, Vihaan stands to gain her father's entire empire. Will Vihaan eventually turn against his father's sinister plan to get Kyra out of the picture and stand to fight for her life or will he see her death as an escape from his emotional prison?
