Alice Munro - 'Runaway' Creative Response

This is a short story for a school assignment that I submitted, to which I received the second highest mark in my year level and the year level above me (not trying to brag hahaha). It is a creative response to author Alice Munro's short story, 'Runaway.' I really enjoyed this project and was very much inspired by Munro's beautiful writing style.
While I aimed to make the underlying theme of my story easy to grasp, if you would like some more context I strongly recommend reading Munro's narrative 'Runaway.'

I wrote this for my Creative Writing Class (Well, Professional Writing) and submitted it to the Literary Magazine at HindsCC. It's a little on the dark side, but I'm pretty proud of this story. This is the story of an abused teenage girl, Maddie. Her need to die has become overwhelming and she is trying to find a way to help herself before she does something she may regret. The story is told from her point of view as she recalls all that has happened to her. Maybe telling her story will help her, maybe not. This isn't just any other sob story. This is more realistic. You may even find yourself comparing your life to Maddie's while reading this story. Disclosure: I wrote this as a 13-year-old and the writing is definitely not up to my current standards, but I feel as though changing what I have already written would take away from the emotion I put into this story at 13 years old. "I just ran away like I was possessed or something". Carson had a troubled face, but the description was accurate. Something inside her had stirred and urged her forward, away from her home, and she had left. Greta knew what it felt like to be possessed by all those feelings, she knew what it felt like to run, not away, but towards those feelings. "I don't think you are running away from anything, I think you're running towards your destiny". Greta and Carson could be good running partners. They wanted more. Greta knew so, Carson was finding it out. Together they could just run. Run towards each other, and towards their feelings. Run towards their destiny. Towards a brand new time. Kate was used to dealing with unfair consequences. Having a less than ideal home life and no one else to support her, she had learned to deal with things on her own. She had learned not to feel and especially not to hope. So when someone new comes into her life Kate does the best thing she can think of, she shuts them out. But, after a series of events in the course of one day, they are thrown back together, and Kate is given the chance to explain herself. Explain why she was so guarded and why she had closed herself off in the first place. And maybe along the way Kate learns that things aren't always so bad. That feeling and hoping aren't the worst things in the world. ***Warning: Mention of abuse is included in this story. Please don't read if that is a trigger for you in any way.
