There's this moment in the 2005 movie adaptation which makes me laugh because Mr. Darcy is so cold and aloof... and that's the moment where Elizabeth asks, "Do you dance, Mr. Darcy?" Presumably just making an effort to be friendly.
And he says, "Not if I can help it." in a very matter-of-fact way. What makes it even funnier is that later, at the Netherfield Ball, he asks her to dance, and she is surprised and agrees despite the fact that she doesn't like him.
The "Do you dance" scene directly precedes (in the movie) the scene where Darcy tells Bingley that Elizabeth is tolerable but not handsome enough to tempt him... so that is the moment which ingrains in the mind of the town that Mr. Darcy is a proud, disagreeable man.
But, I wonder how it would have gone if he answered differently to her question...
