To Love

Hakon looked at me from the corner of his eye. Chains wrapped around his wrists clanking against the wooden walls.

I hugged my body as tight as I could under his stare, "I often think back to when we were children," the tone of his voice startled me. The sudden kindness in his low pitch, "I was always so rude to you. I thought, after she died, there was no hope for us. But I see the way you look at him, and I believe again."

After the loss of their mother, Toril, her brothers, and their father leave their farm outside of Kattegat in search of refuge. But the oldest of the family, Leif becomes king of a neighboring village in the mountains.

The family grows cold and loses themselves over their years.

When the news of Ragnar Lothbrok's death catches wind, they uproot their army back to their old home in order to help avenge him.

But when Toril finds herself there, in the middle of war, to learn to love again will be her hardest lesson to learn.
