Ils grimpaient vers la mer de nuage les surplombant, l'eau ruisselant sur leurs ailes blanches tachetées d'un bleu nuit qui rappelait les claires soirées d'été. L'effort se faisait plus intense à mesure que leurs ailes étaient alourdies par la pluie. S'arrêtant à une dizaine de mètres de la masse nuageuse, celle-ci s'éclaira un instant et laissa paraître une immense ombre ailée en son sein.
