I was 13 when they took my brother away. They took him away because he was Changed. Unnatural. Dangerous. And now it's my turn. 7 years ago, humanity changed. 7 years ago, some males aged 16 to 21 started to change. 7 years ago, they developed strange abilities that no one could explain. So they were thrown into the Citadel, the prison for the Changed. Scientists couldn't explain why they were mutating, why the tumor that grew in each of the Changed didn't kill them. So they left it. The public didn't really talk about it much, each year one in twenty teenagers tested positive so it wasn't that big a problem. Until now. When Roycelin Sanders tests positive, she's thrown into the Citadel, the place where her own brother was imprisoned 3 years ago. No one's heard of a female Changed---and no one expects the Captain of the Guard's daughter to be the first. Roycelin doesn't understand it herself, at first she refuses to accept her situation. Both old and new faces await her in the Citadel, and with them come new experiences and strange abilities she never imagined. Together with the other Changed, she struggles to unravel the mystery of her condition, and what she discovers may shake the very foundations of the Empire.
