May Adleys' life was never easy. A father consumed by rage. A mother defending her father who "don't mean no harm". May lived in constant fear. Fear of the outside. Fear of strangers. Fear of being known to others. She stayed out of sight from the town's people, her father forbidding her to leave the house. She was 5 when that happened, now at 18 May becomes curious of the outside world, especially after a certain farmer moves in to the abandoned cottage across the field from May's farm. Andrew Harlan kept himself to himself, being raised in an abusive household he vowed to himself that he would never marry, never trap a woman in a loveless marriage, love he never knew how to show. This story is about how a young girl survived her abusive father through learning. When she was a little girl her family was very poor, and the death of her mother did not help at all. That is what has triggered her fathers to be abusive. There were times when Amy thought about just ending it all just like that. But the gentle voice of her mother and her last words would always ring in her ear. "Stay Strong". So she did and she also thought that things in her life would never change. That was until the start of her senior year, she met a very interesting teacher, Mr. Conwell.
