No two candles.
The dim light from the small wax candles created a glow that illuminated one side of my dark room. I toss the empty lighter on the shelf beside the unlit third candle and fall back onto my bed. I stare up at the ceiling slowly sinking into my sheets. They embrace me and let me lay for hours in my own world. Away from the darkness. Away from the fear. I close my eyes and slowly start to drift away from reality and into sleep.
After waving in and out of sleep I decide to get up and notice the sudden warmth. The unbearable heat.
The bright light bearing onto my skin.
My eyes squint as I begin to get used to the light.
Light?
Candles?
Lighter!
It all comes flooding back. Was the lighter actually empty? How couldn't I light the third?
Crackling and rising, flames throw themselves at me. Circle me in smoke and bury my surroundings in red.
