You know those prompt generators that make you try to write something? Well, I wrote this as part of a larger fanfic and am actually really proud of how this section turned out, so I thought I would put it here as a standalone story.

Summary: It's late 1864 and the American Civil War is still less than a year from ending. 

Peter is a photographer who has to go out and see the worst of the war without actually 'fighting' himself, but as his lover Mattie will learn, not even those forced to the sidelines will walk away unscathed.

Notes on Tags: this is considered m/m, romance. Reader discretion advised if you are sensitive to PTSD. I don't have PTSD - at time of posting - so I don't know what will set various kinds of it off.

I would read stories that would have word counts in the dozens of thousands all because of a prompt and I think I understand how that works now.
