Dear Nadir,

I'm sorry that after all this time, I'm contacting you with these circumstances. As you know, 8 years ago, Raoul and I had our first child. Our daughter, Ebony, is doing well. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for myself. During the past two years I have lost three pregnancies, the last one ending in a stillbirth. Since then, I have been refusing to lay with Raoul. Because I have been refusing him, Raoul has gotten progressively more stressed and therefore more frustrated and has turned to drinking.

Now the real reason I'm contacting you, Nadir. Raoul is an abusive drunk. I tried to keep it together for Ebony, thinking that somehow, I could help Raoul get rid of the bad habit, but today, he hit Ebony.

Ebony and I are leaving tonight and are coming to stay with you. I don't know for how long, but we need help and protection, and you are the best candidate. We will be arriving in two days' time.

Your friend in need,

Christine
