My beautiful, athletic cousin, daughter by my father's adopted sister, skipped nostalgic festivities during her last day of senior high-school classes; driving to meet me at our family's vineyard in the countryside. We haven't spoken for a year and this may be the last time we speak directly. We live in different worlds in a modern segregated city. We share mutual mutations: her urban formulated sex-appeal from visiting my hood; my nerdy passions of book gifts and video games bought with her suburban valued weekly allowance. She came alone and wants to celebrate her scholarship to a flagship university far away from our bitterly racist city. She is looking through me to our colorful, joyful, and painful past.
