Clarissa 'Blue' Morgan lived happily. She lived on the beach with her parents, and the beach staff. She was happy. Blue was rebellious though. Never letting someone tell her what she could or couldn't do, especially when it came to the water.
On the last day of summer her parents always had a swim off. 'Rain or Shine, we surf at nine!' Was the motto for this year's surf off. There was a downpour scheduled for the day of the surf off. Blue was banned from the show due to the rain, like all other kids younger than fifteen. But no rule would keep her away. She'd just have to learn to listen one way or another.

My favorite color has always been blue. Everyone knew it. Heck, that's how I got my nickname, Blue. I guess everyone thought I go back to Clarissa after the accident, but I don't think I want to. Sandy says I should write everything down, so I won't forget. But she's wrong. No matter what happens, I will never forget. I will never forget the day I was in too deep.

Bile burned her throat as she coughed and all the while she was still flailing at the water, fighting the drag of shoes and clothes to keep afloat. She should kick them off-that's what you were supposed to do if you fell into the ocean with your clothes on-but she was only a dozen feet from the dock. Besides, it was her only coat. Jason watched her the way she'd watch a barracuda. "I know you're following me." "Following you?" What. The. Hell. She gave a mighty kick and tossed her coat onto the dock. Jason just stood there.
