Gwen's life changed dramatically when her mother died. She was whisked away with her Aunt and Uncle to their new home in Ohio far away from the ocean and the other dangers that had contributed to her mother's death.
Safe from harm, fourteen year-old Gwen Frost lives an ordinary life. She's free to do almost anything she pleases except go near the water unsupervised, or, even worse, ask questions about her mother. Gwen knows that her mother died unexpectedly. Strangely. And from snippets of conversation Gwen overhears, she can tell that her mother was strange too. Something major happened when Gwen's mother was young and that something grew to devour her. Something terrible had happened and the strict policy her Uncle and Aunt have against water may be linked.
But, Gwen hasn't asked questions and has thought very little of her mother until one day, she finds a bottle enclosed with a note that suggests that her mother might be alive. Then suddenly, strange events start to occur and Gwen is forced to ask questions, forced to investigate, but her investigations lead Gwen to the last place she'd ever want to be. Gwen is forced to search beneath the surface, in the land of her nightmares. Gwen is forced into the dark water.
