1862, Philadelphia, USA. Charlotte Bice, orphaned at age eight, is taken in by one of the city's most prominent families, the Whitcombs, with the promise that she would be raised as a lady. The Whitcombs are certainly not as respectable as they present themselves, and the worst of all is William: the temperamental middle child, who rarely has a kind word to say to her. Now an introspective young woman, Charlotte struggles to find herself in a society where ladies are expected to be as beautiful as empty. Her future already uncertain, Charlotte's hopes are shaken once again by a letter from an exhausted William, who has enlisted in the Union Army two years prior. This letter reveals an astonishingly different man than the one she remembers. Even more surprisingly, Charlotte likes this man. A lot.

*Book 2 in the Regency Series- can be read as a standalone.* Nathaniel Whitlock, Duke of Somerhall is used to debutantes who want him for nothing more than his title and the wealth and prestige that comes with it. He has seen the first of his sisters marry for love and knows that it is something he wants for himself. Unfortunately, he can never know whether a girl is interested in him or in his bankbook. Then, in comes Lady Emily Carter, his sister's friend. After being off travelling the world for two years, the young lady is back in society, and visits his estate with his sister, Cassandra. When she arrives, Nate is immediately taken by this fiery lady and it appears that she feels the same. However, there is nothing Emily values more than her independence and Nate does not know what she will choose.
