Anna's dance training, however, is complicated by the fact that she is struggling desperately to survive being a person she doesn't want to be. The one thing she is clear about is that she wants to be the perfect, thin ballet dancer. The more weight she loses, the less she cares about anything else, and that's just the way she wants it. This, she finds, is a much more attainable goal than the other, especially when she meets Isabelle. Isabelle Knight, a young ballet teacher and former professional ballet dancer, causes Anna's entire conception of herself to unravel, as does her physical and mental health. Meanwhile, Anna's situation at home with her alcoholic father, provides a constant trigger for her increasingly self-destructive behavior.

Ballet is a lifestyle, not a hobby. Anastasia has known that since she could walk, and has never wavered from her personal regimen of hard work, sweat, and constant practice.
