Every year, in partnership with We Need Diverse Books, Penguin Random House hosts the Creative Writing Awards, looking for diverse, unique voices of high school seniors nationwide. Five seniors are awarded $50,000 in scholarship money annually in these categories: fiction/drama, poetry, personal essay, and spoken word.

Turned my life into art
My collection of poems in the past three years which leads to character development. Realistic incidents, illusionary love, hardships, it's quite a journey. Some say I'm unique and some say I'm Raw. Some say my work is relatable and some feel they can relate. That's crazy though, makes me want to be heard. I was quiet as feathers basically my whole life, closed up, antisocial, lost. Creative Writing Awards: 2019 Selected Poems, Stories, & Memoirs
A scholarship program from Penguin Random House, the Creative Writing Awards are focused on encouraging the next generation of diverse and unique voices. We Need Diverse Books began partnering with Penguin Random House in 2019 on the CWAs, which distribute $50,000 in scholarships each year. Five students receive $10,000 each in these categories: fiction / drama, personal essay, poetry, and the Maya Angelou Award for Spoken Word. There is also a New York City entrant award, in recognition of the Creative Writing Awards previously being centered on New York City.
