13-year-old Oliver Strauch lives in a country called North Burulia. The citizens of this small, isolated island country are brainwashed into thinking that they have the privilege of living in such a great country, but Oliver thinks otherwise. He doesn't feel safe in his own land and secretly despises everything about his country. He vows to leave the country someday and cross the border into the neighboring South Burulia, where he hopes to begin anew and finally find true freedom. But he soon finds out that his new life isn't as happy as he had originally hoped it would be.
North Burulia is based on Nazi Germany and North Korea.
