She also got to study Wizarding customs and make friends with some people in California in a wizarding program she signed up for during the summer when Vernon was forced to take her on vacation with the rest of the Dursleys. It just so happened that a version of her that never stayed with the Dursleys, along with her family in that world, died due to a car crash. It just so happened that the parallel world she resided in never planned for her to die. So, both worlds combined to make room for the version of her that was alive.
