(Kai and Katherine's story) After Stefan sent Katherine back to hell, she met Kai, someone very similar to herself. They worked together to find a way out of there, but Kai figured it out without her, and left her there while he got to go back to earth. She finally figured it out to, and made it her mission to get revenge on Kai for leaving her there. But she realized that they would have to work together if they didn't want to go back. Cade (the devil) wants them under his control, and the only way to destroy him is to work together, and he thinks they can't do it.

Trapped between life and death, Elena Gilbert finds herself on the Other Side-haunted not only by her past, but by the presence of Elijah Mikaelson, the Original whose quiet intensity stirs something deep within her. Meanwhile, Kol Mikaelson, ever unpredictable and dangerous, lurks in the shadows, his chaotic presence threatening to unravel what little peace remains. As Bonnie Bennett risks everything to tear down the veil, Elena is thrust back into a world unraveling at the seams: Damon's humanity is gone, Stefan is slipping into darkness, and Katherine has returned-with vengeance in her veins and a plan to burn everything Elena once held dear. Torn between three impossible loves, Elena must confront her own identity and choose between freedom, redemption, and the kind of love that burns through lifetimes. But not every soul makes it back... and not every goodbye is final.
