Strange Artifices

Another night with the family…well, what’s left of it. There are only four of us now. Jonathan,
Charlotte, Krista and myself, Jamie. We’re unwanted. Well, that’s what our town
calls us. The unwanted. None of us remember our lives before this. Our parents?
Our friends? It’s all gone. There used to be a dozen foster kids living in the crummy two-storey house that they called home, but they were chosen. Adopted.
Every now and then, the postman would come to our house, call out a name and take them out of
town to somewhere better than here. Or, that’s what I hope for.
The postman is a kind man, but there’s something I don’t like about him. Of course, no one else sees it. They don’t tend to notice anything. The weather. Travellers that come through town. Every day seems to be another episode of déjà vu mixed with obliviousness. Strange, isn’t it?
