The existence of heros implied malevolent forces to face, villains and the like. Though, it wasn't always so straight forward. Some villains assume themselves the hero, and are merely misguided.
Mai was never misguided. She knew what she was, what she is, and she won't hide it. She may have been born innocent once, but it didn't save her from what she became.
