All I wanted was a mate.
I just wanted one person to feel my absence in a crowded room--someone who chose me without hesitation, who noticed the silence I left behind, to miss me in the way I'd spent my whole life missing people.
But those dreams were fractured the moment that I met Troy.
He pressed the cold blade flush against my neck. I wanted to flip him so that he was the one on his back. I wanted to fight him and drive my foot into his throat.
"Hurry up." Even with death hovering at my pulse, I leaned into the blade. "Do it. Kill me."
Here was his chance. He could slaughter me in the dark right here, right now. He would never have the opportunity again.
Everyone had a mate and mine was going to kill me.
