"Once upon a time, in a place nobody remembers, a humble villager went looking for mushrooms. He looked high and low, under every rock and in every trunk. But the poor villager simply could not find a single mushroom. So he went deeper than he ever went before, and stumbled upon a beautiful vortex. The villager was astonished to find it needed no frame or foundation, floating in the air. He dared to go closer and reach out his hand. Yet when his fingertips grazed its misty surface a sudden and brilliant surge of energy shot through his body. The villager stumbled back and held onto a tree for support. To his amazement, he crushed the trunk of the tree with no effort. Filled with newfound strength, the villager ran all the way to his village. Once there he told all the lords men of a brilliant mist in the forest that could bestow amazing gifts onto those that touched it. The lords men eagerly told their lord of this news and the next day they rode into the forest. The lord, impatient to receive a gift, marched towards the vortex and thrust his hands against it. To everyone's astonishment, he fell right through! And there, laying beyond the strange portal, he found-"

The book slammed shut, prompting a dismayed whine to come from the only audience member.
"What did he find on the other side?"
He eagerly asked, a chuckle coming from his father.
"That you will have to find out when your older, when you can go through one yourself."
He was not satisfied with this answer, crossing his arms as his father tucked him in.
"I bet it was fun, whatever he found."
His father paused, before giving him a bright smile.
"You'll find out soon enough, Louis."

Gwyneth had always felt connected to her faith, a higher power presiding over her. That faith had shaken that devastating day those years ago, the day that went on to haunt her every nightmare for years to come. She's still trying to come back from it, to not only restore her faith in life and love, but her faith in herself. The sanctity of her spirit- she prayed for resolve. Every punch was a prayer. Every mile was a hymn. Until her knuckles bled and her knees gave. Azriel had been surrounded by darkness his whole life, a poison on his world, on his being. He exercised restraint in his every waking moment, banishing that darkness within himself. Some guessed of the strain it put on him, but no one knew the extent of it, how deep his scars ran. It was better this way, he was sure. He had always thought that if there were a higher power- which he wholly doubted- such deities must loathe him to have burdened him such darkness. He hadn't much faith in the gods anyway, much less faith that he could sway their opinion on him. But Gwyneth and Azriel did have one thing in common: the quiet fight within themselves. They only knew one way: to go about it alone, couldn't fathom letting another in. But there's a magic in finding someone who is your equal but opposite, something transforming. And frankly, Gwyneth and Azriel could both use a little magic. All characters owned by SJM in the ACOTAR series. Story takes place after the events of ACOSF. Aligns with the events in my other fic: A Storm of Flames and Deceit. I haven't finished Crescent City, so this story takes place outside of the events of those books as well. Waking up face down in mud sucks any day of the week. But coming around in the sludge of a strange realm...? Well, that just redefines a bad day altogether. Trapped in an unfamiliar world, sixteen-year-old Quinn is frustrated that none of the strange Tree People appreciate his urgency to get back home to earth. Now he is faced with a choice that could change the course of his life: escape and find his own way home, or stay and help them find the cause of the poison ravishing their world. When the mind-reader unlocks one of the ancient mysteries of the Tree People it points to the only way of saving them from annihilation: they have to find the Power of Light. What exactly that means, the mind-reader doesn't reveal, but his next warning comes as a shock to all present: finding the mysterious Power of Light can only be done with the help of the dangerous enemy tribe whom they once called family. Quinn soon finds himself a little more entangled in the lives of these gifted beings than he'd care to be. Especially after meeting Jazz: the feisty girl from his world who seems to be a regular visitor to the world of Zoay. To Quinn's constant frustration, the aqua-eyed pixie makes it clear that she's not there to make friends. On their journey they'll brave bizarre encounters in dangerous alien forests, while sacrificing pride and will for the survival of all. Along the way Quinn finds more than he ever thought to seek: purpose, fulfillment and love. When the Power of Light is finally found a devastating discovery is made: if all of Zoay-including their enemy-want to live and prosper, one must be willing to sacrifice their life.
