Seventeen-year-old non-binary artist, Maddie, wrestles their own personal demons every day: an alcoholic father, a dead mother, bullies, and their impending future. They have their friends, Nick and Melissa, for support but something is still missing from their life. Nick is so into himself he rarely sees anything outside of his own world. Melissa is one of Maddie's best friends, as well as the girl that Maddie has been pining for since the day they met. Quiet and lacking self-confidence, Maddie keeps their opinions and problems to themselves. For relief, they retreat to drawing their comic, Big Burly Betsy, a plus-size, lesbian, superhero with telepathic powers used for good.

That's until they get into a horrific car accident with Nick.

After slipping into a coma, Maddie and Nick wake up in Spase: the world between states of existence. Becoming Big Burly Betsy, Maddie fights to help save the souls stuck in Spase. Jealous of Maddie's status as The Guide, Nick devises a plan to sabotage their every move. Under the guidance of Reynolds, the deceased family dog, will Maddie be able to save the souls trapped in there, dodge those who attempt to squash their strength, and still be able to wake up?

Maddie finds out that in Spase, nothing is as it seems.
