The species that had once peacefully thrives on Polus was now under threat by Mira, who wanted to use them for testing. So they created their own super weapon to protect their civilisation. 

In short, it worked. They called their creation the 'imposter', a murderous version of their species that could perfectly blend in with human crewmates. 

Test Subject 8643 was born to kill, just like all the others... it had always been her mission, which she usually completed easily.
