[ SHOELACES: A NON-LINEAR LOVE STORY ]

[ COMPLETED - 81K WORDS ]

[ 2021 WATTYS SHORTLIST ]

Darrion Gubart thinks he's a loser, a loner, a musical theatre nerd, a math addict, and almost anything else except for the main character. As a high school senior, he can hardly hold in his excitement to move off to a prestigious college and start a new life for himself. That is if he gets in, of course, with the constant swirl of doubt and anxiety swirling in his mind. Luckily, he has his one friend, Jazmine Lockart, who cares for him along the way. The only issue is Jazmine would rather party with her soccer team than spend a night with Darrion watching Dance Mom Compilations (though, she loves him enough to do just that).

Darrion has a relatively supportive family too. Emphasis on the "relatively," for almost everybody except his family knows that Darrion likes boys. But Darrion loves them, so he decides to ignore that small piece of information and focus on the good aspects, like their weekly board games nights.

Truthfully, Darrion has almost made the fact he likes boys a side note in his own life, mainly because of the lack of first-hand experience to which he can refer. Well, that's until he meets Santiago de Rosa, the man of Darrion's dreams (to put it simply). And, for the first time in Darrion's life, things seem to be looking up.

Well, that's until somebody dies.

Jace Summers is not your average high school boy, per se. He prefers being himself no matter what anyone else thinks about him, and he's proud of who he is. He has pastel pink hair, stunning deep brown eyes, and a sweet and silky voice that makes all of the girls swoon. Too bad he's gay though, and everyone knows it. Jace has been out to the world since seventh grade and he never got too much trouble from it, which he is thankful for, but he knows he would be okay even if he was bullied harshly. It's just who he is. Alec Walker is a whole other story, however. He is very basic, brown hair, hazel eyes, all-black attire, and he is well-known throughout the school but he doesn't consider himself to be one of the popular kids. He loves skateboarding and singing, has good grades. There's nothing overly unique about him- except his voice could make angels swoon. Both boys are different but not so different that you'd think they would dislike each other. Well, you would be wrong. They hate each other with burning passions. Sorry- hate is a strong word. They loathe each other with deep burning passions. Jace thinks Alec is a jackass know-it-all because that's how he comes off to a lot of people until you get to know him, and Alec thinks Jace is annoying with how he presents himself. Those seem like small things that could be easily overcome, however it's also their encounters in the halls or in classes that cause problems. By now it's just mutual hate that both boys are too stubborn to give up. But when one day they get news that seems like the end of the world... it turns out to be the best thing that has happened to both of them. Not at first, but with time. Read to find out what happens! (Also- it is a mystery to even me how long this story will be. I'll be posting chapters as I finish and we'll see how long it turns out to be. It could be my shortest with like four chapters, or my longest with thirty or more. You never know. I hope you enjoy it though!)

49 parts Complete Mature
When Jordan Cameron was ten years old, his mother stopped speaking and was never the same again, going from one institution to another and ultimately to a group home. While his father explores the world as a well-renowned geoscientist, Jordan's older brother, Tim, is forced to raise him. Tim, eleven years older than Jordan, never had a normal childhood, living with their schizophrenic mother. Jordan lives in his own world, or so that's what it seems to the average person. No one, not even his brother, has ever given him a chance. That is until Tim's best friend comes along. Jamie Perron has a history of bad relationships, alternating between men and women. This last time he is kicked out by his girlfriend and has nowhere to go so he turns to his best friend, Tim. Jamie only knew Jordan as a child, but never did he think he would develop an unusual relationship with Tim's weird, quiet, and sullen (although cute) nineteen old brother through the course of one exciting and interesting summer. [COMPLETED] [Warning: Strong language used throughout the book.] He put his hand over my notebook and the other over mine. I glared up at him, his golden brown eyes catching my attention. "I can't write like this," I pointed out. "Is this all you care about?" Ryan asked. I shrugged. "Not this specifically, but yeah, I care about my grades." Ryan smirked. I swallowed nervously but refused to break my stoic expression. He leaned closer to me, my heart pounding so hard against my chest it felt like it might break out and fall on the table between us. His mouth was right by my ear, and I could feel his warm breath when he spoke which sent shivers down my spine. "Well, aren't you a little a scholar?" *** The only things Alex Moris ever cared about were his grades and his sister. However, when the boy his sister likes, Ryan Smithe, makes things complicated and causes him to feel things he's never felt before, Alex realizes that, maybe, there's more important things in life than grades and scholarships.
