Elena Casiano has lived her whole life on the road, traveling around the United States in a renovated camper van with her Dad, a freelance photographer. The summer before her senior year of high school, her dad decides to open up a restaurant in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Unfortunately for Elena, that means staying in the middle-of-nowhere town of White Rock, Texas with a grandmother she hasn't seen in over a decade. She just has to survive one summer, and then she'll be on the road and on to college.
But White Rock isn't the sleepy, evangelical town that Elena pictured; five years ago, in the summer of 2010, a high school senior named Russell Benson brought the town to national headlines when he murdered his girlfriend and killed himself.
Russell's cousin, Nicole, has spent everyday since then throwing herself into the world of true crime; after all, Russell was like a brother to her, and she's determined to prove that he never would have killed Noami Rose, and he never would have killed himself. Nicole enlists Elena's help to discover what really happened to her cousin, and finally get past the roadblocks that her dad, the Chief of Police, had set in place the night of the murder.
White Rock's greatest tragedy quickly becomes a tale of devastation, danger, and deception, and someone in White Rock is determined to keep the town in the dark about what happened.
