For example Kid is 23 but in this story he will be 20 years old. First year- 19 years old Second year- 20 years old Third year- 21 years old Both Kid and reader are in their second year of college so it means they are both 20 years old. Reader in this story smokes. The reason is that I think it fits the personality and it's one of the main reasons of interaction between the two characters.
