Soulmates exist. That one person ideally suited to another as a close friend or romantic partner. When one's soulmate dies then he/she will be the other's guardian for the rest of his/her living days. Jake despises that system and yet, has a special ability to see souls, allowing him to see the dead soulmates of people in society.
