We all knew the day would come, the day when our societies crumble into nothing - What we did not expect was that It would not be our own doing, but otherworldly beings. It was devastating when it happened, the masses of our population were eliminated - Some countries took a harder hit than others, not that it mattered in the end anyway. We did the only thing we could - we ran like prey, not caring about the stragglers left behind. It is funny when roles reverse like this. The once dominant and thriving species burnt to ashes, like we were never there. It was survival of the fittest, well that is we are told by our colony leader. After that day, we were forced into hiding. Below ground seemed to be the safest escape from our sky invaders. So below ground, small cities began to grow into what stands before me today - The Gorge... home. Our people run on a moneyless system - your work hours generally determined your worth. We are a colony that thrives on working tirelessly for our leader, our savior. We work as hard as we do because he keeps us safe in this enclosed sanctuary. We show our dedication to our leader by biding to the declaration of compulsory 5-year military service. Our leader encourages long work hours and to work hard in the military, all to improve our worth. He is a thoughtful man, always having our best interests in mind. He is here to protect us...right?

It's been five years since the plague struck. Leah knows there are other survivors, but she's avoiding them. She is doing just fine on her own. Surviving after everyone she knew died has made her physically strong and honed her intelligence, but she is emotionally devastated. There is nothing to fear if you don't make yourself emotionally vulnerable. James has spent the last five years helping to build up a colony of survivors. He believes in the small town they have populated and its mission to save humanity from extinction. He and his small team of men find scattered people and bring them in. Over the last two centuries, women have fought for and won more and more rights, gaining equality with men. Society, law, and technology bolsters and enforces these rights, but now they are gone. Women's equality with men is over. There are just too few of them. They aren't lesser but greater, more important, more valuable than men. Men are expendable. Men can stay outside alone if they like, but all women must be brought inside the safety of the Colony and properly taken care of. James has been searching the area Leah lives in. Her time of solitude is up. Leah sparks something in James he's never felt before. He's not letting this one get away, certainly not twice.
