The narrator has had these questions ever since she could think, but it all changed when she met the woman under the water.
Would the icy lake she couldn't stop being pulled to answer her questions? Or would it drag her down till she couldn't breathe?

Worried for her own sanity, she goes to her grandparents for guidance, asking them for some kind of answer to be given, if she truly had become something frightful, and what they tell her shocks her, the birthplace of her mother.
