Years pass and Grace didn't accomplish anything in her life. Obviously her family had been suffering as well for many years. Seeing their daughter unhappy and lost made them sad, made them forget they had another daughter as well.
The thought of living her life the way she did, made her realize she doesn't want to live like this anymore. Everything evolves around her trauma and she craves salvation. Grace wants to die.
