After her parents died when she was 12, Karin Tatsumi was adopted by the Chairman Of the National Basketball Committee of Japan. (NBCJ). She was trained by him to become the best player in Japan for Women's Basketball. She was a player at Teiko Junior High, known for being self-centered and crushing her opponents single-handedly. She was called the Queen of the Court, but for all different reasons. But when she was defeated is a national tournament, simply because she tried to make a team effort, her father put her in a team of boys, stating that she was better than girls and playing with aggressive boys was sure to guarantee improvement. So he put her in the Boys' Basketball Team at Seirin High School.

Kuroko Tetsuya had known Karin since junior high. He was the only person she acknowledged as a friend. He knew about her family and her issues. So when he came to know that she was gonna be playing for Seirin, he got himself admitted there. Everyone knew him as The Phantom Sixth Player of the Generation Of Miracles.
