A double blinded study means that both participants and experimenters are unaware of the conditions assigned to each participant so that behavior cannot be influenced. It is the best way to conduct a study - it ensures that the results are genuine. Once each party becomes aware of the conditions to which they were assigned, be it the placebo group or the experimental group, the results can become ingenuine. In fact, it is impossible to fully trust the results of a study if it does not follow a double blind protocol. Both sides are blissfully unaware of the true conditions assigned to them.
