For seven years, Koen Rake has been delaying the afterlife, searching for the last female of his species, and finds her at last in the walled city of Hadria, where more of his kind perished than anywhere else. The humans are still a threat in the ravaged, post-war world, even to a predator like Rake. And when he does find her at last, he discovers that Hale Grey is a Shadow without wings, damaged beyond repair, with no memory of how her wings were taken. He must convince her to trust him, to believe that they are the same, and discover the truth of her past, protect her from the humans, and liberate her from a life of captivity. After all, Hale Grey is his afterlife. But Hale Grey has ideas of her own, and she isn't ready to give up the life she has built for the promises of a stranger.
