after aaron hotchner's team of profilers escaped from the grip of the mafia couple queenie and harvey, they woke up in a hospital and were informed that their abductors had escaped. they were being put into the witness protection program so that they could successfully testify against the confirmed criminals-- once they were actually arrested. the team of profilers would be declared dead until trial was an option.
they aren't out of the clear yet, but maybe they'll get some rest before the trial?
