1907: Gwendolyn Graham is a happy teenager, living on her family's farm outside Baltimore. She has already decided the path her life will take: As soon as she is old enough, she will marry the young man whose farm adjoins theirs, and they will of course live happily ever after, raising horses and helping manage their tobacco farm. Everything is going according to her well-laid plans. Then her father is killed in a farming accident. Her mother forces her to move to the city, forbids any contact with her love, and plans for her to marry for money and social position. She hates her new life, but still manages to keep contact with her gentleman friend from back home. Her world falls apart yet again when one of the men with whom her mother forces her to keep company drugs her and deposits her in a brothel.
