One Sunday, in 1848 after Lyddie was done with the church, she went shopping for a new book to help her with her reading skills. Frederick Douglass was there to see how the status of slavery was for other people, he had nothing to fear since he already escaped slavery. Lyddie runs into a famous person named Frederick Douglass. They go on to try and know each other better by talking about their past. They then talk about the state the world is in and then try to help each other out in the process.
