Sweet, intelligent, but naive Chloe has just enrolled in her first boarding school: SSB Academy. Tired of moving around and constantly being the social odd girl out, she looks forward to a year at the esteemed fighting school where, supposedly, only the best of the best are allowed to attend. (Whether or not she believes that rumor is besides the point.)
What she comes to realize, though, is that the Academy is so much more, in more ways than one. Gradually, she notices strange things that others almost specifically ignore - odd coincidences, peculiar people, and nonsensical dreams. But after even stranger events, a silver-haired man tells her to look for an item a new friend is hiding, and her worst fear comes true:
The dreams start to make sense.
Haunted by nightmares of fire, demons, robots, swords, stars, and death, Chloe worries that her new companions are hiding something from her - something very important - but she never could have imagined what the truth would lead to.
From a untrustworthy school board, to the missing former principal, to the mysterious Resistance, to Chloe's conflicting past, it all adds up to one thing:
The search for the 28th Faction.
Bree Ritcher has had her entire adolescent life stolen by people she doesn't even know the true identity of. When she breaks free of a deranged asylum, she watches her only friend die and erupts a raging fire from her own body.
Entering this new world she meets Chase Morgenstern, who's connected to her in more ways that she can even begin to imagine. A man with abyss eyes, who goes by the name of Sebastian, reveals himself to both of them and continuously taunts them of a his 'little game' and threatens to slaughter everyone they care about, but they come to find out he needs Bree first.
She's welcomed into the world of Valencia, the home to all magic users and supernatural creatures. Each individual is unique and has a special power of their own, and each knows of this looming prophecy that has destined Bree's arrival into their world as the beginning and end of their world as they know it. Her journey begins with Chase Morgenstern and their friends, learning who each of them are and training with an elite class of only 12 students to become god-slaying warriors. Their academy, Shoreline, is to be protected but they come to find out demons are getting more bold and beginning to attack them.
Bree and her friends might be the only key to stop this looming darkness, but she alone might be the reason for chaos to erupt across their land.
