Marie Lyall Wolf's father died when she was young and she and her younger sister were sent to live in a small town with thier mother and stepfather. Everything Lyall's father owned was left to her, including the money. Lyall's parents didn't like it and forced her to allow the house to be rented but that wasn't enough. Lyall was a pretty girl and her stepfather was a pimp, so the sent her to work. When Lyall's mother died Lyall worked harder to keep her stepfather from noticing her sister and making her work too.

Lyall was a wallflower at school, dressing to go uninteresting but that didn't stop the boy who shared her class schedule from noticing her. What was it about her that interested him?
