To be frank, she hadn't ever really thought of leaving the village. Well, not forever at least.

It was all she'd ever known, it was the only place she knew how to be who she was. She knew how to be an orphan, she knew how to be an errand runner, she knew how to survive. She knew what to bring the ladies Dimitrescu so they never thought to bring her inside their castle, she knew to greet Miss Beneviento in public but never to even step foot on her property. She knew she did not even want to bother with Salvatore Moreau and she knew how to be just useful enough for Heisenberg. She did not know how to be anything else.

But, the village was not safe. Despite what everyone else seemed to think, this was not true. Sacrificing the few for the good of the many did not strike Neci as safe, even if the many then got to lead, normal, dull, toll driven lives. The village was not safe.

Watching her neighbor get his throat ripped out outside, a part of the many, Neci winced. The village was not even a little safe. Maybe she should have thought more about moving on.
