Gordon Richards was only a few months into his practice as a psychiatrist when, after suggesting an unorthodox means of relieving stress, one of his patients commits suicide. In an attempt to find out why, Gordon chose to experience the same method. But something went wrong, and his life changed forever. Now, with the ability to interact with the dead, he seeks for an answer, and finds himself in the company of a paranormal investigations team. Also entering his life is Donna, a member of the team. Almost immediately, they develop a strong bond with the potential to go far beyond a simple friendship. However, Gordon finds himself held back by the questions that have plagued him since the beginning. 

Now, as a member of the team, he has come to believe that his new-found ability can be used to help the deceased move on. Meanwhile, he and Donna find themselves being drawn closer together as Gordon struggles maintain rational thinking in the face of the unknown. But, the gift that has been forced upon him is not without a price, and while investigating the remnants of Maine's Augusta Mental Health Institute, Gordon discovers the dark side of his need to help the departed. Once again, his life is transformed, taking him down the path of personal disaster. A journey from which he will never escape.

He drew closer to the terrified woman, closing off any chance of escape. "I do not need help from the likes of you." He pressed his palms against the wall on each side of the shivering woman, and leaned in, whispering in her ear, "Oh, I will punish you, and you will beg for death, long before I grant it to you." He pulled back to look at her frightened face. "Worry not, I will let you watch this man you love so much suffer and die before I end you."

Gideon has everything going in life. He has a nice flat, a girlfriend, a mistress, a good paying job, and today he's been promoted to the CEO of his firm. He has everything he has ever wished for, so why does he feel empty inside? Not wanting to think about his feelings, Gideon goes out with his colleagues to celebrate his success as he challenges life by driving his car wasted without any regards of the consequences. Why would he? He's bigger than life. At the same time a single mum is driving her car adjacent from Gideon, oblivious of his dangerous driving style as she is in the middle of a heated argument with her teenage daughter, the tension making her younger daughter cry. She turns around to silence them both but unknowingly diverts her car to the other lane and crashes into Gideon's Porsche. The accident happens in a flash, pushing Gideon over the bridge and the other car into the railing, resulting in the death of a single mum. Gideon barely escapes drowning and is pretty pissed as he has to walk all the way home. But strange things happen, and he realizes his life isn't the same anymore. Can Gideon redeem himself, or is he forever stuck between the afterlife and earth?
