Turns out, despite being a crazed psychopathic mass murderer doesn't actually affect one's eyesight or common sense.  Where Voldemort isn't blind to the signs of abuse or trauma and confronts Harry about it in a surprisingly... caring manner. Meanwhile, Harry's mind short circuits for a few moments at the fact that the person who brutally killed his parents and many others with no remorse, spent his whole life tracking him to torture and kill him and created a whole war being dubbed the Dark Lord was the first and only person to actually show him compassion and see his pain.
