Hiccup H. Haddock didn't grow up as a Berkian Viking. Cast off to see as a baby, and raised by pirates. When he is found floating and half dead in Berkian waters, he is rescued my Stoic the Vast. Essentially trapped, the young pirate seeks to find a way off the Island, and in this he meets a Nightfury.

Toothless has always told Hiccup that vikings are cruel, horrible people that kill dragons for the fun of it, and that he should stay as far away from them.
