When Sir Reginald was a boy, he lost his mother to the Black Plague. That was the end of his suffering. Now, he is a heroic knight who slays beasts and saves damsels, just like the stories his mother always read to him.

On his way to save his childhood best friend Isabella from marrying the evil lord Perj, things are still a bit too easy: whenever something goes awry, a mysterious black mist swoops in and puts him back on his horse's back, sword in hand.

But at the same time, the black mist creates archetypal villains for Reggie to fight. It puts him through hell, then saves him at the last minute.

Under the hand of the mist, Reggie magically gains a squire, his best friend turns into a helpless princess, and even his mother comes back from the dead...but different.

Reggie must choose: does he keep living the lie of being the hero he always wanted to be, or does he accept the harsh truth?
