Things start getting out of hand and most of the main crew (Ash, Serena, Clemont, And Bonnie) lose most of their pokemon. Unprotected the crew gives in and joins an lab site that experiments on pokemon and poke balls. 

During this their pokemon have a great time being in the wild. They miss their trainers but, they felt free. The group of pokemon belonging to the crew eventually get captured, only few making it out. Out of those few Chespin and Panchum are left alone in the forest surrounding them.
