They say a picture can tell a thousand words, which sometimes, many are unable to speak. It all started in 2006 for Millie, 7th September 2006, the day silence fell. Feeling scared, intimidated and affraid of anything remotely new and alien to her, instead of speaking out and protesting, she went into silence. With people bleeting on about this and that, telling her how to be, instead of helping her, Millie opened herself up to no one. Only when it came to eight years later, in 2014, she began to lift her silent protest.

Mama told me that I was a beautiful girl when I was little. Mama said that I had the prettiest tan skin, soft wavy black hair, and the most enchanting emerald eyes. She always called me her bundle of joy. Then she got very sad when she told me that I didn't have a voice. I was only two at the time. I didn't understand any of the former English gibberish. Mama looked like she wanted to cry every time I opened my mouth to let out what was supposed to be a small giggle of joy. Or when I wanted to say her name and Papa's name. But no sound would ever come out, and I was a very confused little toddler until the very first day of kindergarten. © Copyright 2016 Yuan S.C. HIGHEST RANKING #221 in Short Story 3/17/19.
