When a labor shortage hits a corporate-sponsored colony, the powers-that-be are forced to resort to "non-traditional" ways of filling the job market-namely, splicing machine parts with reanimated dead colonists. These formerly-dead-or Remnants, as Corporate likes to call them-work very hard for zero pay, all in the hopes that they might one day be able to finally rest in peace.
Detective Constable Two-Zero-Six is one of these working stiffs. Their second-life is nothing if not monotonous, investigating the same kinds of petty crimes that they handled in their first-life. That is, until a Remnant is brutally slain, and the human police pawn the case off on Two-Zero-Six because, well, the Remnant wasn't "technically" alive. Now, charged with solving what no one is sure actually counts as a murder, Two-Zero-Six must track down the killer all while navigating what it means to be human...again.
A criminal mastermind makes a bold move against a wealthy client to put himself in a position to retire in comfort. He has no idea what he's up against when a young widow, desperate to make ends meet, sets her eyes on earning the bounty set on his head.
