In 1943, Private Lucille Roberts, a fighter pilot for the 107th Infantry Regiment, was captured by HYDRA. Many of her regiment were tortured and injected by Arnim Zola with what HYDRA had called, the Super Soldier Serum. She was only one of the two in her regiment to survive, her companion, Sergeant James Barnes, was the other. Captain America, otherwise known as Steve Rogers, later recused both of the remaining regiment. Barnes, Rogers, and Lucille later formed the Howling Commandos, to battle Red Skull's forces. However, during their attempt to finally capture Zola, in the Austrian Alps, Barnes was caught in their ambush and plummeted hundreds of feet from a train. As no body was ever recovered, Barnes had then been presumed deceased. Her and Sergeant Barnes had become very close until the point of capture, so much that Barnes was going to propose after the routine scouting. Unfortunately, Lucille was later recaptured by HYDRA and put into a cryogenic stasis in order to ensure her longevity. HYDRA had planned to use her once Barnes was either killed or went against orders, but every so often, to preserve her body, they would take her out of her cryogenic stasis and inject more of her variant of Super Soldier Serum. That was HYDRA's first mistake...

All Adelaide Lehnsherr ever wanted was to be happy. From the very first moment she stepped into the apartment of her boyfriend, James Barnes, also affectionately known as 'Bucky', in Bucharest, Romania, she could breathe again. The painful events of Ultron and Sokovia, as well as the burden of the years before, was behind her. The two were finally starting a life together, and she was nearly about to drop everything to move in with her boyfriend in Romania before that peace was shattered. First Lagos happened. Then the Accords. Then the love of Steve's life, Peggy Carter, died. And finally, the masked black cat-man came after them to kill them, claiming they killed his father in some freak bombing at the United Nations building in Vienna. Adelaide and Bucky had no choice but to run, but they were soon caught and transferred to a CIA facility in Berlin. Steve had no choice but to sign the Accords, but little did he know that Adelaide, his fellow Avenger, would not be given the same choice.
