Will had never really thought about life outside of the village he lived in, is what he always said to the questioning people (people?) who became suspicious of him. They were told to never leave. He likes rules, he wouldn't disobey them over a simple curiosity.

Except this wasn't a simple curiosity. This was a thought that had been haunting him for years, growing stronger and stronger the more he tried to bury it (the more he realised how cruel they were, keeping them all hostage).

He's thankful Andrew, his friend of three years, is more impulsive than him.
He's also thankful that Andrew's older brother, James, relies more on plans than impulse.

They might actually have a chance to escape this hell hole.
